Civil Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Criminal Defense

Alec Waid is a trial attorney with Battaglia, Ross, Dicus & McQuaid, P.A., specializing in general civil and commercial litigation and criminal defense. A native of Tampa Bay, Alec grew up in Manatee County and graduated with an undergraduate degree in Political Science, with minors in Economics and Criminology, from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He left the region to attend law school at the University of Miami but returned upon graduation to begin his legal practice in Pinellas County.

At the University of South Florida, Alec was an active member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He also gave back to the campus community through his work in Student Government, ultimately being elected to serve as the Student Body Vice President.

At the University of Miami School of Law, Alec continued to grow as a community leader in his work re-establishing and leading the Miami Law Trial Team. Alec’s talents as a trial lawyer were recognized through being named the top trial advocacy student in the Litigation Skills Program. He was also a member of both the Moot Court Team and the Inter-American Law Review where his work was selected for publication. Ultimately, Alec graduated cum laude with his Juris Doctorate and was inducted into The Order of Barristers advocacy honor society.

Alec served for nearly four years as a prosecutor for the Pinellas County State Attorney’s Office. He was elevated in record time to the role of Special Prosecutor in the Gang Unit where he prosecuted primarily violent crimes and drug trafficking offenses. He was also a member of the Traffic Homicide Unit where he responded to and litigated cases including DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and vehicular homicide. In his time at the State, Alec tried more than 25 jury trials to verdict including the above-mentioned crimes, first-degree murder, attempted murder, sex-related offenses, firearm offenses, fraud, and hate crimes.

He prosecuted and tried financial cases spanning from a more-than $300,000 scheme in which an individual defrauded a title agency, real estate agent, homeowner, and the State of Florida to steal a home to a national money laundering operation supporting an organized crime and drug trafficking ring. In the gang unit, Alec also found success dealing with firearm offenses and other violent crime, including a successful verdict following a two-week, race-motivated homicide trial with nearly 40 witnesses. He also focused on expert witness testimony including handling experts in forensic accounting, medicine, ballistics, DNA, toxicology, latent prints, traffic reconstruction, human factors in car accidents, blood spatter, shoe and tire print impressions, and digital forensics.

Outside of the office, Alec also devotes time teaching trial advocacy to trial team students at Stetson University College of Law.

Alec now brings his talents as an aggressive trial attorney to Battaglia, Ross, Dicus & McQuaid where he is focused on representing individuals and businesses in civil matters as well as defending those facing criminal charges.
